Critique Out Of Books Mio, My Son
Sometimes my book reviews require some story telling as set up. This is one of these posts. Scroll down if you don't want to wallow in my nostalgia. When I was a child I wanted to be Pipi Longstocking's next door neighbor. I figured I wasn't cool enough or strong enough to live on my own, eat nails and carry a horse with my bare hands but I sure wanted a friend who could! I read everyone of Astrid Lindgren's Pipi books and watched all the poorly dubbed movies more times than I can count. But

Another of the great stories by Astrid Lindgren, one of my favourite authors, in any language, for any age group. She was unique.

"All I know is that I laughed because it made my father the king happy." I couldn't say what or that anything was wrong with it, but I could not connect with this book as well as I did with The Brothers Lionheart or Ronia the Robber's Daughter. It is a cute story, and although a lot of it seemed heartfelt, it struck me as distant. However, I can absolutely see younger readers loving this. A lot of it seemed dream-like, some parts reminded me of fairy tales. Perhaps it is because Mio himself

This book held my 6-year-old daughter enthralled over several bedtimes, and towards the conclusions other times upon request too.Mio's Kingdom is a story of good versus evil. Prince Mio is the good, and Sir Kato is the bad. But at the beginning Mio isn't Mio because he was Karl Anders Nilsson living in North Street, Stockholm in Sweden, adopted by an unloving couple, and he had no friends except for Ben. Then one day he disappeared and ended up in Farawayland where he met his father the king.

if you have not read this - read it. it is such a beautiful, heartwarming, dramatic, and sad story about courage and hope, about the good standing up against evil. the style is simple enough to be accessible for children, but poetic enough to be enjoyed by adults. and i even think that this is one of few books by astrid lindgren that can be appreciated more by adults than children.

Mio, my son... such a kind and unassuming phrase, for such a kind and unassuming boy, in such a sweet story. Such a sweet story, full of longing and sadness - but only at first. At first there is sadness, a lack of love - but then comes happiness, an abundance of love. An abundance of love - but one tinged with a strange fear, a terror of the unknown. A terror of the unknown transformed: turned into a quest, a rescue mission. A rescue mission with a boy and his friend, both still afraid and

Karl Anders Nilson, known as Andy, is a lonely boy. An orphan, he lives in Stockholm with his foster parents, Aunt Hulda who wanted a boy and Uncle Olaf who thinks Andy makes too much noise. His only friend is Ben, but they sometimes fight. The only person who is kind to him is Mrs Lundy from the sweet shop. But then one day Aunt Hulda, after telling Andy yet again that the day he came to their house was an unlucky one, is given a card to post by Mrs Lundy and an apple that turns to gold. The
