It first appeared as a serial in a Calcutta periodical in 1928 and was published as a book the next year; it was the first published novel written by the author. It was followed in 1932 by a sequel Aparajito, which was later also adapted into a film of the same name by Satyajit Ray.

It's a slow story but a story one will come to love in the end

AWOSAME book.....so much emotional and also practical..

Pick any chapter at random and you will find something related to your life, that will move you deep within your heart.

The book which made me cry when I was too confident that there would not be any book available to do that to me. naturally I hate to be emotional but this book deserves it.

The best book I have read so far in my life. The raw emotion in the sentences are so powerful. The characters are etched in my mind very powerfully. I had to stop reading the book towards the end because I could not gather the emotional stability to read on, such is the power in the words. I finally finished the book after laying off for a week. Unbelievable writing! I will never forget Durga and Opu.

..taking you back to childhood memory lane.Excellent portrayal of lived moments.
