Not to be missedThis is part of a director's cut, whatever that means, and also much is a repeat of "Twilight of Courage." I really enjoyed the first six books of this series but reading this one so much later is like jumping into the middle of the action and feeling somewhat disconnected. It was nice meeting old friends but it just wasn't the same as the earlier books. It somewhat lacked the heart and soul of the others. Maybe it was just me who was tired of reading about war.
I originally read this series in 2012 and enjoyed it. However, the final three books (including this one) are referred to as "Director's cuts." They are in a different style and read more like a journalistic account of events rather than a novel. The character's personalities have been lost; I didn't even bother to read the final two books of the series when I re-read them in 2017!
Although interesting it hasn't been a favourite of mine within the series.
I was disappointed yet again as I alluded to in my review for book 7. The final three books of the series simply do not live up to the somewhat high standard set by the first six. This book is bogged down by too many unfamiliar characters and a lack of connection for those characters to the previous books in the series. Of the original main characters only John Murphy makes brief appearances throughout. Another detractor? The short length. This works against the authors in that everything,
This book continues the story of World War II. The writer is good at drawing the reader into the atmosphere of the developing war. There were so many new characters introduced and the stories of the former characters de-emphasized, that I felt the book was a weaker book in general than the others in the series. I will finish the last volume as I am greatly invested in the characters. I really do not like the moralizing at the end of these books.
I enjoyed the earlier books more. There are a lot of characters to keep track of. But I like moving the story through more of the war years.
