Criticism Of Books Freedom or Death

I chose this book only because of the author, and it's my fourth one of the same author. What a prose, and characters are all marvelous. Beautiful story where fact and fiction are indistinguishable. I smiled, became sad, and sighed mostly.

I enjoyed the book, although not quite as thought-provoking as I expected. The title itself is of some interest because throughout the book, when the phrase is repeated by characters, the conjunction is Or, not the titles And. The plot, however, features endless uprisings, repeated and fruitless bloodshed, dumb pride and little to no gains. The protagonist is a great masculine, warrior type of romantic figure. A simple but a true hero but there are hints of underlying passions. He verbally

In his third novel, Kazantzakis turns to his birthplace. He was born in Crete in 1885 and in 1897, Greek Christians took up arms to rebel against the Turkish conquerors who had ruled Crete since the mid 1600s. This novel is the story of that rebellion. In my reading of The Life of Greece, The Story of Civilization, Volume II by Will Durant, I learned that Crete was the center of Europe's most ancient civilization: the Minoan, from which we got the legends of King Minos, the Minotaur, Daedalus

I enjoyed reading most of the book- the style is captivating and full of adventure. What I did not like is that the book seemed to promote some sort of hidden Greek chauvinism and machismo behavior, it portrayed intelligent people as useless adn weak, and I really didn't like that the main character resolved personal insecurities by killing other people.

The beginning of the book is a little slow and hard to understand. However, once the climax of the novel is reached (a little less than halfway through), the novel is so hard to put down! Captain Michalis is an example of a hero who won't let anything stop him from defending his country. The last chapters were breathtakingly beautiful, and it felt as if I was a part of the novel. Very well written, and I learned a lot about the history of Crete from reading this. A must-read for a historical

Freedom and Death is an intense novel. Moreover, its a source informing us about the way Cretans used to live during the period of Turkish conquest.In Kazantzakis novel, just like in real life, Cretans appear to be a proud people, longing to see their Mother Land freed. In Megalokastro, were most of the story unfolds, Greeks, Turks, Armenians, and Jews live together. Turks are the local authority, of course, as a part of the Ottoman Empire. And this is where Captain Michales, a brave resistance
