Explanation Toward Books Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio
What a beautiful story! My grandmother was born in 1901 and had polio as a young teen (we think that's the right age). Her father was a doctor and had heard about some unorthodox treatments that were being done for polio victims and tried them on her. They involved heat and massage, so I am now assuming these were the Sister Kenny treatments that the author referred to. My grandmother made a full recovery. I'm fascinated that my great grandfather found out about these treatments so early and used them (they were started in 1903 in Australia and didn't come to the U.S. until 1940). I would love to learn more about my great grandfather and what he did exactly, but I guess I'll never know. I'm thankful to have read Peg Kehret's account and get a little glimpse into what polio must have been like for my grandmother. As an aside about the book, one of the things I love the best are the pictures and the update at the end about the friends she made along the way. She brings it all to life so clearly that you long to know how it all turns out.Details Books Supposing Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio

Small Steps by Peg Kehret is a true story based on the author, who was diagnosed with polio. I find it interesting because the book talks about a subject that is rarely discussed. Peg Kehret is a kind, young girl who never gave up hope and persevered through her diagnosis. I enjoy how the author wrote each chapter to represent a month of her treatment. In Small Steps, Peg Kehret describes her treatments with great detail so the reader can understand what she went through. She had many roommatesThe book small steps is about a teen girl named peg that just discovered she has polio, Her parents rushed her to the hospital to see if she could overcome this terrible disease. Peg battles going from highs to lows with polio, meting people through her journey of polio in and out of hospital rooms. Will she survive this terrible disease? I thought this book was great it had so much details and emotion. I loved it! I also thought this book was great because it wasn't to sad because there was
Very quick read, sweet little story...it is exactly what it is.

Author Peg Kehret's autobiography of her experience with polio in 1949-1950. It's amazing how much still resonates--the "nice lady" therapists who say it's okay that I'm hurting you because it will help you vs. the kind, helpful therapists who push without hurting, the world is still not set up for people with disabilities to move around independently, etc. It's amazing how horrible her early experiences were, with nurses and doctors who talked around her and ignored her needs and hurt her, and
3RD RESPONSE:I am currently reading Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio. This book is by Peg Kehret and this story actually happened to her. So far it has been a great book because I love how Peg tries to overcome polio. This book is about Peg Kehret getting a major virus called polio. But what makes it worse is that she doesn't just have one type of polio, she has three kinds of polio. Peg is only in the seventh grade and now she is paralyzed from the neck down and can barely breathe or swallow.
One of the best book's I've ever read. What an incredible snapshot of life in a different time and place.
I am currently reading Small Steps by Peg Kehret. Small Steps is one of the best books I have ever read, it is about the author, Peg getting a disease called polio. Polio can be a deadly disease, but other cases of polio are different and you can get better within a year. Peg was diagnosed with polio at the age of 12, almost 13. She had to go to a hospital about 2 hours away from her house, the hospital was in Minneapolis and she lived in Austin. She had a hard time breathing so she had to be in
